1 dead in fiery crash along US 36 in western Indiana

NEWPORT, Ind. (AP) - A western Indiana sheriff says one person died when a car left a highway, struck a bridge column and burst into flames.

Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps says dental records likely will be needed to identify the driver because of the fire that engulfed the car following the crash about 7:45 a.m. Monday along U.S. 36 about 70 miles (110 kilometers) west of Indianapolis.

Phelps tells the Terre Haute Tribune-Star that two people tried to pull the driver from the car, but the driver was unresponsive and they were unsuccessful.
