Longtime Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Manager Simunic fired

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Longtime Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Field Manager Doug Simunic has been fired.

Simunic was in his 22nd season with the American Association independent baseball team and is the only manager in club history. The team issued a statement Sunday saying he had been "relieved of his duties" effective immediately.

Simunic won 1,202 games and five league championships with the RedHawks. He was also named manager of the year six times.

His contract was set to expire at the end of the season. RedHawks owner Bruce Thom said it was time to change the on-field leadership.

Pitching coach Michael Schlact has been named interim field manager for the remainder of the season. The search for a new full-time manager will start following the season.
