Furman receives $1 million gift from anonymous donor

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Furman has received a $1 million gift in support of the football program. The donation was made in the name of former coach and current College Football Playoff member Bobby Johnson.

Athletic director Mike Buddie said part of the donation will go toward creating the Bobby Johnson Head Football Coaching Endowment. The school said Monday the gift is from a donor who wants to remain anonymous.

Johnson spent 24 years coaching at Furman, including eight as the team's head coach from 1994-2001. He led the Paladins to two Southern Conference titles, three NCAA playoff appearances including a trip to the Football Championship Subdivision finals in 2001.

Johnson went on to become Vanderbilt's head coach from 2002-2009. He's currently part of the selection committee that picks the four teams for the College Football Playoff.
