Officer being investigated in friend's shooting on desk duty

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago police officer under investigation for a shooting that left a friend severely injured has been placed on desk duty.

The Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/2eQfKqk ) reports that Patrick Kelly was placed on administrative duty after the newspaper published a story about various incidents in Kelly's career and the shooting of his friend.

A department official acknowledged Kelly's status on Wednesday - the same day aldermen voted to approve a $500,000 settlement to a woman who suffered a miscarriage after Kelly repeatedly used a Taser on her.

Kelly was in his apartment with Michael LaPorta on Jan. 12, 2010 when LaPorta was shot in the head. Kelly contended it was a suicide attempt but LaPorta has said he wasn't suicidal and the Independent Police Review Authority reopened the investigation this year.
