Suspect held without bond in shooting of police officer

CHICAGO (AP) - A third man is being held without bond in the wounding of a Chicago police officer during a shootout following a store robbery.

Dante Jeffries of Chicago is charged with attempted murder for firing the shot that wounded the police officer on Friday.

Like two suspects arrested shortly after the shootout, the 27-year-old Jeffries is also charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery and kidnapping with a firearm.

Police say the three men took part in the armed robbery of a cellphone store in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood. After tying up the employees, they were confronted by police as they tried to flee the store with merchandise. The officer was shot in the leg.

The officer was taken to an area hospital, where doctors stabilized her condition.
