Police officer shot in confrontation with armed suspect
CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago police officer was shot responding to an armed robbery call at a cellphone store.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi (goo-lee-EHL'-mee) says the female officer was "conscious and alert" after being shot in the knee Friday. The officer was taken to Mercy Hospital and was later transferred to Stroger Hospital. Her condition was not released.
The shooting occurred after police arrived at scene in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. They were fired on by a suspect as they left their squad car. The officers returned fire. but didn't wound the suspect.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the wounded officer, who hasn't been identified, is in good spirits. However, she will be held at the hospital overnight for observation.
Johnson said one suspect was arrested as he hid in an alley, and a gun was recovered. A person of interest was questioned by police.
