Groups Illinois owes money seek time to appeal lawsuit

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A coalition of social-service providers owed money by Illinois state government is seeking more time to appeal its lawsuit to the Illinois Supreme Court.

Andrea Durbin is chairwoman of Pay Now Illinois . She said Thursday was the deadline to appeal a lawsuit against the state to the high court. But the coalition petitioned to postpone the deadline to Sept. 30.

Pay Now Illinois filed a lawsuit in Cook County seeking payment of bills because Illinois was without a budget for two years. Lawmakers enacted one this month. Durbin says she was told Sept. 30 is the deadline in the budget law for paying past-due bills.

The coalition announced Thursday that Circuit Judge Robert LeChien (luh'-SHEEN) dismissed this week a similar lawsuit the group filed in St. Clair County in February.
