Springfield investing in youth programs as summer starts

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Several groups are working with the city of Springfield to expand youth programs this summer.

The efforts come after an uptick in shootings as summer began. The city of Springfield has pledged $135,000 toward the programming. Mayor Jim Langfelder says he'll meet with city officials to decide how to divvy up the money. He's promised the funding will go to initiatives that fill gaps in services for children and teenagers.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (http://bit.ly/2slGrYc) that organizers of summer programs say reducing costs for families, investing in jobs for older youths and providing mental health support are key priorities.

About a dozen organizations provide summer activities for children in Springfield, including the city park district, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and the Springfield Urban League.
