Man charged in stabbing deaths of his elderly parents
CHICAGO (AP) - An elderly Chicago couple found stabbed to death in their home was allegedly killed by their 47-year-old son.
Dexter Barnes has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths Sunday of Johnnie and Shirley Ervin. Cook County Circuit Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Tuesday ordered Barnes held without bond.
Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said Barnes' brother found their parents' bodies on the kitchen floor. Prosecutors say 73-year-old Johnnie Ervin had been stabbed 11 times and disemboweled, and 69-year-old Shirley Ervin had been stabbed in the chest. Both were pronounced dead on the scene. No motive was given for the deaths.
Court records show Barnes has an extensive criminal history. Santini said Barnes is on probation for aggravated battery after he spit on a nurse treating him for a bee sting.
It wasn't immediately known if Barnes has legal representation.
