Earlham College launches new Peace Corps Prep program

RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana liberal arts college is launching a new program designed to prepare its students for service in the Peace Corps.

Earlham College says its Peace Corps Prep program will boost the Quaker-affiliated school's longstanding commitments to peace, social justice and global understanding when it starts this fall.

The Richmond school has a strong connection to the Peace Corps, which was created in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy with help from former Earlham professor Clarence Pickett.

Peace Corps volunteers work in various fields in developing countries.

Associate professor of politics Jennifer Seely will oversee the school's new program. She served in the Peace Corps as a health and nutrition aid in the Ivory Coast from 1992 to 1994.

She says the experience "indelibly shaped my life and my career."
