Northern Indiana man arrested in connection with slaying

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A 22-year-old northern Indiana man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 66-year-old man who was found unresponsive in a vehicle near a river.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department arrested Cody Garman on Friday night on preliminary charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery in the death of David Swartley of Goshen. Swartley was found unresponsive with apparent head injuries Thursday morning near a wooded area by the Elkhart River.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Swartley's cause of death.

Police did not release any information on a motive in the case or how Garman was connected Swartley.

Swartley was a businessman, former teacher, the founder of a Christian youth group and a two-term Goshen city councilman in the 1990s.

Garman remained held without bond Saturday.
