Project aims to protect George Rogers Clark memorial grounds

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) - Work has started on a project to raise the elevation of the lawn near the Indiana memorial to Revolutionary War figure George Rogers Clark to protect against Wabash River flooding.

Crews removed more than a dozen trees from the memorial grounds in Vincennes last week, with workers to start after Memorial Day on placing fill dirt across the area.

Vincennes levee superintendent Hunter Pinnell tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial (http://bit.ly/2qEZVGz ) the project will better shield the memorial grounds and the city from potential flooding.

Federal officials have spent several million dollars in recent years on repairs to the memorial that opened along the Wabash River in the 1930s honoring Clark, who led American soldiers to defeat British forces at Fort Sackville in Vincennes in 1779.
