YouTube TV Boosts Lineup With 7 New Channels

The YouTube TV lineup is growing, but several major cable networks are still absent.

The $35-a-month streaming TV service, which launched a little more than a month ago, recently added seven new cable networks to its list of available channels, as spotted by 9to5Google on Monday. Subscribers can now watch AMC, BBC America, Sundance TV, IFC, Telemundo, Universo, and We TV.

By the numbers, the additions are significant: YouTube TV launched with 39 channels, so the list just got 18 percent bigger. As with any channel additions, however, their usefulness depends on your TV tastes: unless you speak Spanish or are a fan of indie TV shows, you're probably not overjoyed by the additions.

YouTube has promised that its TV service will expand, both in terms of the channel lineup and the geographic areas it serves. For now, the service is a compelling alternative to Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and other competitors, but even with the new additions, it has some major holes. There's no Cartoon Network, TBS, or TNT, and still no word on when or if they'll be added.

You can augment the basic YouTube TV package by paying an additional $11 per month for Showtime and $15 per month for Fox Soccer Plus, and every subscription comes with access to YouTube Red. But there are no packaged tiers of channels like the ones that PlayStation Vue and DirecTV Now offer.

And you can't get any channels at all if you don't live in YouTube TV's current service area, which is limited to the metro areas of Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Denizens of those cities can, however, stream YouTube TV while traveling to an unserved area.
