IDEM warns of high ozone in central, southern Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is warning people that high ozone levels will continue through Tuesday in central and southern Indiana.

The agency issued Air Quality Action Day warnings for Monday and Tuesday in portions of central and southern Indiana.

It says anyone sensitive to changes in air quality may be affected when ozone levels are high. Children, elderly people and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors.

Ground-level ozone is formed when sunlight and hot weather bake vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and gasoline vapors.

It's the first ozone warning IDEM has issued this year. The affected counties cover an area extending southward from Indianapolis and its suburbs to the Ohio River from Jefferson County westward.
