Coroner: Worker had heart attack before drowning in river

KEOKUK, Iowa (AP) - An autopsy shows a worker from southeast Iowa suffered a heart attack before falling from a hydroelectric dam into the Mississippi River.

The body of Ron Summers was discovered and taken from the water Sunday. He'd been working the late shift Friday night at the Ameren Missouri dam at Keokuk. He was reported missing early Saturday morning.

Hancock County, Illinois, coroner Kendall Beals says Summers had a heart attack while driving a golf cart-style vehicle and the vehicle went into the river, where he drowned. Most of the dam is in Hancock County, Illinois.

Ameren officials say Summers was a hydro technician with more than 50 years on the job and was a volunteer firefighter for the Jackson Township department on the west side of Keokuk, where he lived.
