Baseball: Buffalo Grove quickly gets back to winning

Buffalo Grove's baseball team bounced back from its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion, getting an 11-0, 5-inning victory over host Glenbrook South on Saturday in nonconference play.

Riley Rundquist homered and drove in 3 runs, Tyler Rundquist scored twice and Leo Rule had 2 hits in the leadoff spot as the Bison (8-1-1) made good use of their 9 hits.

John Lundgren tossed 4 innings of 3-hit ball, striking out three and walking three, and John Carpinelli pitched 1 scoreless inning.

Fremd 6, Highland Park 5: The visiting Vikings rallied with 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning and needed every one of them as the Giant had 3 in the bottom of the frame.

Luke Seidel and Tommy Wingen had 2 hits and 2 RBI apiece; one of Wingen's hits was a double. Alec Honickel also had 2 hits and drove in a run.

Zach Goodman earned the win after allowing 1 earned run over 4 innings, and Ashton Statz pitched 1⅔ innings to pick up a save for Fremd (4-8).

Maine West 13, Wheeling 1 (5 inn.): The host Warriors produced a 7-run third inning and ended the game early by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Cory Scholler, Matt Johnston and Nick Stone each drove in 3 runs, while Stone, Cory Scholler and Alex Zimmerman all produced doubles.

Zimmerman and Jeff Mustari had 3 hits for Maine West (4-7).

Drew Roberts had a pair of hits for Wheeling (6-5-2), while Kyle Bullock doubled and Cade Kaplan tripled.

New Trier 6, Prospect 5: Ryan Howe came up with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning but it was not quite enough for the Knights (5-6) to catch the visiting Trevians in nonconference play.

Grant Zellmer finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks for Prospect, which committed 3 errors and allowed 4 unearned runs to score.

Frankie Mack and Chase Cumming provided a combined 3⅓ hitless and scoreless innings of relief for the Knights.

Burlington Central 7, Barrington 6: Barrington (13-4) saw its win streak stopped at eight as the visiting Rockets earned a nonconference win.

Will Yorton led the way at the plate for the Broncos, finishing 3-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI.

Blake Gosswein and Sean Davis both had 2 hits for Barrington.

Benet takes 2 from St. Viator: The host Redwings took a pair of East Suburban Catholic Conference contests from the Lions, winning 7-6 and 11-1 (6 inn.).

Brandon Gorz drove in the decisive run in the first game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning for Benet to complete a 3-run rally. The Lions out-hit the Redwings 11-8, with Casey Kmet (3-for-3 with a double) and John Finnegan (2 doubles) leading the effort.

In the second game, Cole Kmet homered and Casey Kmet had a double for St. Viator (8-6). But Benet lashed out with 12 hits, including a triple and a homer by Marty Dosen.

Leyden 3, Oak Park-River Forest 1: Josh Borges produced an exceptional start, allowing 4 hits while striking out eight in a complete-game victory over the visiting Huskies in West Suburban crossover play.

Josh Cubon drove in 2 runs, while Michael Wilms had 2 hits and Kevin Nevarez had a double for Leyden (5-2).

Evanston 7, Hersey 3: The host Wildkits took control of a close game by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Leadoff man Tyler Haffey finished 2-for-3 with a double for Hersey (4-6-1), which got 2 hits from Alberto Garcia.

Plainfield Central 6, Elk Grove 0: Starter Joey Michaud kept the Grens scoreless, striking out six over his 5 innings while allowing 5 hits.

Ryan Uehara and AJ Navarro both had 2 hits for Elk Grove (4-8), which lost its fifth straight.

Vernon Hills 13, Hoffman Estates 3 (6 inn.): Sophomore Danny Wizceb made the most of his first varsity start, allowing 1 earned run in his stint as the Cougars (6-8-1) won the nonconference matchup.

Conant 6, Maine South 2: Jack Reiger hit a go-ahead 2-run homer in the fourth inning as the host Cougars picked up a nonconference decision.

Chase Fahy allowed 9 hits in 5 innings but only 1 run in earning the win for Conant (6-7), which won its second straight.

Tyler Hedmen finished 3-for-4 with a double form the leadoff spot for the Cougars, while Logan Smith had 2 hits and Ian Taylor drove in 2 runs.

Palatine 16, Deerfield 9: Brent Penrose homered and drove in 3 runs and also earned the pitching decision after a couple of relief innings as the host Pirates churned out 16 hits in nonconference action.

Palatine (7-7) had big results at the plate from John Weber (3-for-4, triple), Josh Stitt (3-for-3, double), J.T. Streepy (2 hits, 3 RBI), Jack Hopper (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Jake Andersen and T.J. Skelnik (2 RBI apiece).

Christian Liberty sweeps: The Chargers topped Schaumburg Christian 12-8 and 9-4.

Sophomore Nathan Stenzel doubled and also earned the pitching decision in the first game. In the second game, junior Ben Law got the win and John Platt had a double.
