Baseball: Priester, Cary-Grove shut down Prairie Ridge

Quinn Priester went 5 innings and allowed just 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk Tuesday as the Cary-Grove baseball team opened the Fox Valley Conference season with a 6-0 win over Prairie Ridge.

Ryan Ignoffo, who pitched the final two innings, led the Trojans' offense, going 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Tyler Pennington added a double and an RBI for C-G (6-1, 1-0) while Justin Trausch had 2 hits and an RBI.

CL Central 4, Huntley 3: Huntley was held to just 6 hits in this FVC loss. Joe Rizzo had 2 hits for the Red Raiders (5-3, 0-1) and Denny Smith added a double. Nick Laxner took the loss on the mound.

Yorkville 5, West Aurora 0: Dustin Tomas, David Woods and Alberto Martinez had the only hits for West Aurora (1-6) in this nonconference loss.

Elgin Academy 8, North Shore Country Day 0: Justin King tossed a 5-inning 2-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks as Elgin Academy, playing its first game of the season, won this Independent School League contest. Andrew Wilson (2 RBI) and Ethan Hill each had doubles for the Hilltoppers.

ACC 8, Wheaton Academy 2: Aurora Central scored 6 runs in the top of the 11th inning to take this Metro Suburban win. Hunter Darnell (RBI) and Johnny Belskis (2 RBI) each had 2 hits for the Chargers (9-1-1, 1-0) and Austin Berens added a double. Kyle Czerak pitched 4 innings in relief for the win, allowing 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and no walks.

CL South 4, McHenry 2: The Gators (8-0, 1-0) scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to win this FVC game. Brian Fuentes had 3 hits including a home run and 3 RBI for Crystal Lake South, Michael Swiaty added 2 hits and Scott Skwarek had a double. Luke Dunham picked up the win on the mound in relief of Andrew Engelking.
