Boys track: Prospect powers to East victory

Defending Mid-Suburban League champion Prospect produced a strong beginning to its East Division effort this spring, topping Wheeling and host Rolling Meadows in a boys track triangular meet Tuesday.

The Knights amassed 90 points to top the Wildcats (57) and the Mustangs (39).

Prospect was able to win three of the relays - the 3,200, the 400 and the 800 - while Rolling Meadows won the 1,600 relay.

Individual wins for Prospect came from Nate Cozine in the 1,600 run (4:41.7), James Riordan in the 800 (2:01.1), Vince Shields in the shot put (54-2) and Billy Matzek in the discus (155-7).

Wheeling got big scoring from Lawrence Knish and Jason Shannon. Knish was the top finisher in the 110 high hurdles (15.8), the 300 hurdles (41.8) and the high jump (6-2), while Shannon won the 100 dash (10.9) and the 200 dash (22.4).

Rolling Meadows top placements included efforts from senior John Gerardi (400 dash, 51.98), Matt Zieba (long jump, 19-10) and Zach Gunger (pole vault, 14-1).
