Johnson, Johnson, Kellenberger apparent winners in District 301

Challengers Christina Johnson and Tina Johnson and incumbent Jeff Kellenberger were headed to victory Tuesday in the Burlington-based Central Unit District 301 school board race.

With all 15 precincts reporting in Kane County, Christina Johnson, 39, of Plato Township, has 1,109 votes; Tina Johnson, 47. of Elgin Township has 874; and Jeff Kellenberger, 52, of Plato Township has 876.

Returns are not yet available in DeKalb County, which also is included in the district. Results are unofficial.

"I'm very excited," said Christina Johnson, a self-employed educator. "I cannot wait to get in there and make a positive impact."

The board could only have three members from one township and it currently has two from Elgin.

Other candidates included incumbent Duane Schmitt, 61, of Burlington Township with 869; Maria Crawford, 49, of Plato Township with 862; Michelle Schmidt, 50, of Elgin Township with 516 votes.

Challengers cited curbing rising taxes and addressing a lack of transparency and trust in the district administration and board as key issues.
