Indiana to install water filters in some East Chicago homes

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) - The state is expected to start installing water filters in some East Chicago homes showing elevated lead levels.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (http://bit.ly/2oKQJwI ) Saturday that the work by the Indiana State Department of Environmental Management will begin April 10 at households within a Superfund site.

Federal environmental officials discovered elevated lead levels in drinking water last year. Officials have said the higher levels are due to inadequate corrosion control.

State officials say the water filters should be installed by April 30.

The Environmental Protection Agency said last month that it was preparing to begin remediation work on nearly 200 properties within the Superfund site in far northwest Indiana. EPA officials said the 192 properties targeted for cleanup have high concentrations of lead and arsenic in the soil.
