Wheeling man charged with sexually assaulting 4-year-old

A Wheeling man charged with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy was ordered held on $1.5 million bail Thursday.

Adrian Navarro, 30, is charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, which are punishable by up to 120 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Navarro got into bed with the child about midnight Sunday. Later, a woman entered the bedroom to check on the boy and observed Navarro abusing the child, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Caitlin Casey.

The woman took the child into another bedroom with her and another child. Later, Casey said, Navarro, joined them in the bed and abused the boy a second time.

The woman took both children and left the apartment. She returned with them later that morning, at which time Navarro told the 4-year-old to keep what happened a secret, Casey said.

A short time later, the boy's mother noticed he was withdrawn, Casey said. Crying, he told her what happened, and she took him to an emergency room where a sexual assault kit examination was performed, Casey said.

Navarro's background includes a 2013 conviction for aggravated DUI for which he received 18 months' probation. He also has misdemeanor convictions for driving without a license, battery and retail theft, Casey said.

He next appears in court on April 21.
