One hurt in chase, crash in Aurora

One person was injured Monday afternoon in a chase and crash in Aurora after a driver refused to stop for a Kane County sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

The chase began at about 3:35 p.m. after a deputy saw a black Ford Fusion with two men inside speeding north on Lafayette Street in Aurora and activated his emergency lights, but the driver did not stop and tried to lose the deputy, according to the sheriff's office.

Two minutes into the chase, the Fusion turned south on Route 25 and struck a pole for the traffic signals on the southeast corner of Route 25 and Ashland Avenue.

Authorities said the driver ran from the scene and was arrested a short time later. The front-seat passenger was injured in the crash and taken to Copley Hospital in Aurora with potentially life-threating injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Because of the injuries to the front-seat passenger, state law mandates that an independent agency conduct an investigation, so matter has been turned over to the Aurora Police Department.

The hometowns of the driver, 38, and passenger, 37, were not immediately available.

The investigation is still ongoing, and no charges have been filed yet, the sheriff's office said.
