Boys track and field: Wheeling's Knish wins high jump in Top Times meet

An impressive group of athletes from the Mid-Suburban League, the North Suburban Conference and the Northern Lake County Conference were high achievers in the high jump on Saturday.

Wheeling junior Lawrence Knish won that event in the Illinois Prep Top Times Classic at Illinois Wesleyan's Shirk Center on the Illinois Wesleyan campus in Bloomington, clearing 6 feet, 6 inches. Bloom's Frank Massey and Warren junior Branden Ellis also made that height, but Knish won on jumps.

Grant's Henry Halverson was fourth (6-5), followed by Hoffman Estates senior Fynn Alade (6-4) and Prospect sophomore Michael Shafis (6-2).

Prospect seniors Billy Matzek and Vince Shields both cracked the top six in the shot put, with Matzek taking fourth (54-2.25) and Shields in fifth (53-9.5).

In the 60-meter dash, Wheeling senior Jason Shannon was third (6.91) and Hoffman Estates junior Declan Rustay was sixth (6.96).

Antioch senior Landon Keefover won the 60 hurdles in 8.12, and Grayslake North senior Griffin Gawenda was sixth (8.54).

Grayslake Central senior Jack Aho charged to a comfortable win in the 1,600, finishing in 4:15.48 - almost four seconds ahead of his nearest competition. Libertyville junior Alex Tam was fourth in 4:21.87.

Warren senior Melvin Pettis claimed sixth place in the long jump (21-10.25).

In the 4 x 400 relay, Hoffman Estates' Rustay, Daniel Banahan, Dylan Kreuzer and Anijel Jones finished third in 3:29.03.

In Class 2A, Vernon Hills junior Aidan Williamson took sixth by clearing 13 feet, 3 inches, and teammate McNemon Vincent, a senior, was sixth in the shot put (50-2.5).
