Baseball: Lopez takes control for Elk Grove; combo 1-hitter for Maine W.

Joe Lopez tossed a complete-game 4-hitter to power visiting Elk Grove past Niles West 3-1 on Friday in a nonconference baseball matchup.

Lopez struck out eight, did not allow a walk and threw 61 of his 83 pitches for strikes.

Leadoff man Austin Brown had 3 of the 6 hits for Elk Grove (2-1). Lopez also contribute at the plate with a double.

Tyler Selvig drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, when Elk Grove scored twice.

Maine West 7, Ridgewood 0: Starter Matty Mustari and reliever Matt Johnston combined on a 1-hitter as the visiting Warriors rolled to their first win of the season in nonconference action.

Mustari pitched 4 innings and allowed 1 hit and 4 walks with 1 strikeout. Johnston was dominant, allowing no hits with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk over 3 innings.

Jeff Mustari, Jacob Cabral, Matty Mustari, Alec Paschos each doubled for Maine West (1-1). Mustari and Paschos both drove in 2 runs.

Prospect 5, Notre Dame 1: Starter Ryan Howe allowed 1 hit and 1 run in 4 innings, and Frankie Mack provided 3 no-hit relief innings as the host Knights won a nonconference contest for the team's first win of the spring.

Anthony Catalano and John Morgan had run-scoring singles in the second inning, when Prospect (1-1) scored 4 runs.

St. Charles 4, Barrington 2: St. Charles East scored 3 runs in the third inning, and that turned out to be enough as the Saints' baseball team prevailed in a nonconference matchup Friday at Barrington.

Tyler Acosta and Blake Gosswein each drove in 1 run for Barrington (1-2), which dropped its second straight, and Sean Davis had a double.

Broncos starter Will Yorton suffered the loss after allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks over 3 innings.

Glenbrook South 8, Hersey 5: The host Titans produced a 6-run third inning and made those runs hold up in a nonconference win as the Huskies dropped their season opener in nonconference play.

Alberto Garcia and Tyler Haffey both doubled twice and Nick Wiley also had 2 hits for the Huskies ,who out-hit Glenbrook South 10-7.

Glenbrook North 5, Rolling Meadows 1: The visiting Mustangs matched the Spartans in hits with 4, but Glenbrook North played an error-free game while Rolling Meadows committed 4 miscues.

Marco Perez started for Rolling Meadows (0-4) and allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits over 5 innings.

Willowbrook 14, Schaumburg 0 (5 inn.): The visiting Warriors amassed 14 hits and 6 walks as the Saxons committed 3 errors in nonconference play.

Jon Kelso, MJ Ranieri and JT Ceh each had 2 hits for Willowbrook (3-0).

Vinnie Kandefer came up with two of Schaumburg's 3 hits; he also suffered the pitching loss.

Dundee-Crown 9, Palatine 5 (5 inn.): The visiting Chargers scored in each of the first four innings to pick up a nonconference win.

Palatine (1-3) out-hit Dundee-Crown 9-8. JT Streepy finished 2-for-3 and drove in 2 runs, and Jack Hopper and Zach Oles each had doubles.

Max Myszka pitched 1 inning of scoreless, hitless relief for the Pirates.

Leyden 8, Maine South 1: Starter Michael Wilms got the Eagles off to an impressive start by fanning 12 and allowing 3 hits over 5 innings as host Leyden won its nonconference season opener.

Brian Szopinski had a triple and drove in 3 runs for Leyden, which got all its scoring in the first two innings. Josh Cubon finished 2-for-3 and drove in 2 runs.

Streamwood 13, Hoffman Estates 3 (6 inn.): Dylan Bloom doubled twice and drove in 3 runs for the visiting Hawks, but the Sabres plated 6 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early.

Three Streamwood pitchers limited Hoffman Estates (0-2) to a total of 4 hits.
