Jacobs grad Orange racks up accolades at Augustana

Jacobs graduate Chrishawn Orange, a sophomore guard on the Augustana University men's basketball team, recently was named to the D3hoops.com fourth team All-America.

Orange's play helped Augustana reach the NCAA Division III national-championship game, where the Vikings fell to Babson 79-78. Orange had 21 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field in the team's 90-79 win over Williams in the national semifinals in Salem, Va.

Orange finished the season by leading the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He shot .511 from the field, .423 from the 3-point line and .782 from the free-throw line. Additionally, Orange averaged 3.3 rebounds and had 53 assists and 39 steals.

Orange, a first-team all-CCIW selection, hit game-winning shots in each of the first two rounds of the NCAA playoffs.

In his eight postseason games, Orange averaged 15.3 points and 4.2 rebounds, while shooting .517 from the field, .538 from the 3-point range and .750 from the free-throw line.

Augustana finished the season 24-9.

Williams at Barry: Elgin High graduate Arie Williams closed out his college career recently at Division II Barry University.

Barry dropped a 96-82 game to host Alabama-Huntsville in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament.

Williams scored 18 points in the game and made three 3-pointers. He finishes his four-year career at the school in ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 980 points.

This season, Williams averaged 13.1 points per game in 30 contests. He shot .431 from the field and made a team-high 97 three-pointers on 230 attempts (. 422). Williams also connected on 66 of 74 free-throw attempts (. 892). He averaged 2.2 rebounds, had 97 assists against only 41 turnovers and had 34 steals. Barry finished the season with a 23-7 overall mark.

Hejna at Swarthmore: Batavia product Ben Hejna recently was named to the all-Centennial Conference academic team. The honor recognizes student-athletes who were named to both the academic honor roll and to the all-Centennial teams for their sports. Hejna recently took first place in the high jump and third in the triple jump at the indoor Centennial Conference championships.

McCullum cited for excellence: Larkin graduate Kendale McCullum, a junior guard at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, recently was named to the all-Great Lakes Valley Conference first team.

McCullum also was one of only two unanimous picks to the all-GLC defensive team.

In 30 games this season, Mc Cullum averaged 15.3 points per game and shot .485 from the field and .765 from the free-throw line with a team high 114 made throws in a team-high 149 attempts. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds, had 181 assists against only 100 turnovers, while notching a team-high 77 steals to go with 11 blocks.

Heizner earns freshman honor: Kaneland graduate Allie Heinzer, now a freshman at Lewis University in Romeoville, recently was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference women's freshman indoor track and field athlete of the year.

Heinzer helped the Lewis women's team win the indoor conference team title.

Heinzer also was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-country Coaches Association all-region team. She ran a season- and career-best 24.95 in the 200 dash and earned herself a provisional mark for the race at the GLVC championships, which ranked her fourth on the all-region list and 28th in the nation.

Pacheco named MVP: South Elgin graduate Adolfo Pacheco was the winner of the UW-Stout football most valuable offensive award. Pacheco wrapped up his four-year career by rushing for 473 yards, bringing his career total to 2,138 yards, good for sixth on the all-time rushing list. Pacheco scored 2 touchdowns, including a career-best 85-yard TD against UW-Eau Claire.

Pacheco scored 19 total touchdowns 18 on the ground and one via pass during the 2016 season. His 114 total points this past season ties him for 19th on the school's all-time scoring list.

Snider at Maryville: Hampshire alum Aly Snider is a freshman on the Maryville (Tenn.) softball team and is enjoying a strong debut campaign.

Snider recently was named the USA South Athletic Conference rookie of the week for a second time already this season.

During her most recent award time frame, Snider, a designated hitter, went 8-for-12 (. 667) with a .692 on-base percentage and a 1.083 slugging percentage to go along with 4 runs scored, 6 RBI, 2 doubles, 1 home run and 1 walk. In a doubleheader split with LaGrange, Snider went a combined 4-for-7 with 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, 1 double, 1 homer and 1 walk. In a doubleheader split with Huntingdon, Snider was a combined 4-for-7 with 3 RBI and a double.

"Aly is having one of the best freshman years I've seen," coach Leah Kelley said at the time of the award. "She is such a tremendous hitter and her confidence continues to grow daily."
