Baseball: Warren bests Deerfield in season opener
Robert Archbold was 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI, and Vic Perez went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, as Warren's baseball team opened its season with a 10-3 win over Deerfield in nonconference action Tuesday.
Riley Kocen earned the win, striking out five in 4 innings.
Woodstock 3, Antioch 2: Colin Wieska had a two-out RBI single in the first, and Connor Geidner doubled in the tying run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Sequoits allowed the winning run to score in the seventh.
Antioch starting pitcher Ben Gutke tossed 4 innings, giving up 1 run and 1 hit, while striking out five.
Grayslake North 5, Vernon Hills 1: Johnny Rennolds had 2 RBI, and the Knights rallied for 5 runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out their season opener.
Vernon Hills got extra-base hits from Nick Marras (double) and Brennan Reback (triple). Cougars starting pitcher Ryan Larsen allowed 1 hit in 3 scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one. Joe Rangel (3IP, 0R, 0H, 3K) pitched Vernon Hills into the seventh with a 1-0 lead. Tony Brown and Matt Gramins combined to turn 3 double plays in the losing effort.
Sebastian Sancen pitched 1 inning for the win, and Danny Yates threw the seventh.
