Tortorice tests out as Scholar All-American

Devin Tortorice is getting the job done on the wrestling mats and on the classroom desks at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

He has been tabbed a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association based on his athletic and academic performance during the 2016-17 season.

The Carmel Catholic High School graduate and native of Wauconda, a 141-pounder, earned a 3.39 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during his first semester. He is majoring in psychology.

Tortorice qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships after placing second at the NCAA Midwest Regional. He also placed third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and finished the season with a 17-8 record with 3 pins, 1 technical fall and 1 major decision.

Men's lacrosse

Augustana sophomore goalkeeper Jeremiah Heredia (Warren) helped lead Augustana (2-4) to a 3-2 win over Benedictine at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island.

Heredia shut the Eagles out for nearly 44 minutes and finished with 15 saves. He recorded eight saves in a scoreless first half.

Men's track

Augustana junior Kyle Hucker (Wauconda) was part of the Vikings' 1,600-meter relay, which took fifth in a season-best 3:17.62 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at North Central College. Hucker earned All-America honors.

Baseball

Augustana junior Matt Loeffl (Grayslake Central) leads the Vikings with a .421 average and a slugging percentage of .579. The Vikes are off to an 8-1 and have climbed into the D3hoops.com/NCBWA Top 25.

Women's track & field

Carthage junior thrower Mia Bennett (Lakes) represented, who participated in the weight throw, peaked at 18.32m (60-01.25) good enough for fifth place out of 17 throwers in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship at North Central.

The fifth-place tally gave Bennett All-America accolades. She became the first Carthage weight thrower to achieve the distinction since Becca McMullin took eighth place at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor National Meet.

Bennett tallied an 18.30m (60-00.50) on her first attempt, which secured her a spot in the finals.

She opened the finals with a mark of 18.28m (59-11.75). This was the best throw among the fourth-attempt marks. Bennett peaked on her final attempt with a toss of 18.32m (60-01.25) but it wasn't enough as Texas-Tyler's Whitney Simmons's final mark of 19.62m secured her the NCAA Division III national championship.

Bennett, who entered the second day ranked 16th in the shot put, secured 11th place with a toss of 13.27m (43-06.50) on her second attempt. She rounded out the Lady Reds shot putters with a 16th-place toss of 12.86m (42-01.50) on her first try.

Women's tennis

Carthage junior Max Mella (Warren) and her partner Angelica Emmanouil won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles over Wisconsin- Oshkosh's Bailey Sagen and Hannah Peters as the Lady Reds won the dual meet 8-1. Mella also earned a straight set win at No. 1 singles as Carthage improved to 8-3.

Women's tennis

For the second time this season, Augustana senior Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove) has been named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin player of the week. She also earned the award on Oct. 5, 2016.

Goggin won both of her singles matches and split two doubles matches on March 12 against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and 19th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. One of her singles wins was a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory over the nation's fifth-ranked player, Megan Humphreys of Whitewater. Goggin also topped Oshkosh's Bailey Sagen 6-0, 6-0 on the day.

For her career, Goggin is now 90-38 in singles play and 87-37 in doubles. Her 177 total career wins are just one off Kim Sawyer's school-record 178 set from 2010-14. Sawyer is also the Vikings' all-time leader with 106 singles wins, 16 ahead of Goggin, who is currently second.

Lauren succeeds sister Dana, who was last week's conference player of the week.
