Disagree with DH endorsement

I am disappointed in the DH endorsement of Douglas Warlick for 5th Ward Alderman in Geneva, particularly after his statements at the recent Geneva Candidate Forum.

It is irresponsible to encourage citizens to vote for a candidate whose opening statement consisted of "I'm different from the other candidates because my life is so blessed."

That opening statement smacks of entitlement. But let's assume he meant it with the best intentions - that he wants to give back because he has been so privileged. And, because he touted himself as a devout Christian, let's assume that he would love his neighbors and work to help those less fortunate.

Candidates were asked whether they would consider making Geneva a sanctuary city. While other candidates answered thoughtfully, Mr. Warlick answered with glib condescension and an undercurrent of racism.

"I would answer that question with another question - did the person asking the question have their tongue in their cheek?" Warlick said. "Are we serious? I'm a mutt, most of us are mutts."

It's ironic that the only candidate who mentioned their devout Christianity was the one who failed to display compassion for others. But the issue with Mr. Warlick's response is not that he does not support a sanctuary city. He discounted a legitimate question from a constituent he claims to want to represent. If he cannot civilly discuss such an issue, how can he possibly be fit to serve on a city council?

The Daily Herald Editorial Board praised Mr. Warlick's "plain-spoken approach." A plain-spoken tantrum is still a tantrum.

Our representatives need to be able to have conversations about complex, often contentious topics. This is not someone I want making decisions about the future of my city. The Daily Herald shouldn't condone it either. I respectfully ask that you rescind your endorsement.
