Endorsements: Helderle, McConville, Sima, Tarasewicz for Lisle District 202 school board

Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct Wendie Ferron's name.

Voters in Lisle Unit District 202 will choose five new board members April 4 — four to serve 4-year terms and one to serve an unexpired 2-year term.

Incumbent Pamela Ahlmann is running unopposed for the 2-year term.

The race for the four other seats features incumbents Eunice McConville, Meg Sima and Bob Tarasewicz, along with newcomers Wendie Ferron, Mark Kelly, Melissa Grant and Daniel Helderle. This is an impressive group of candidates without a single weak link. The winners will face many challenges in the coming term, including construction of a new school building.

McConville, an accountant, has been on the board since 2012 and serves as chairwoman of its finance committee. She brings a strong financial background to the district, understands the issues and works well with the board. McConville is endorsed.

Sima, an attorney, was appointed in September 2015. She is an advocate for ensuring district programs are challenging for students at all levels and brings a thoughtful, reasoned approach. Sima is endorsed.

We like Tarasewicz's willingness to challenge the status quo. While he can be a burr under the saddle of fellow board members, he serves an important role by asking questions that can help prevent the type of groupthink that sometimes can grip any governing board. Tarasewicz is endorsed.

All four of the other candidates would make strong board members, but we like Daniel Helderle, a software development project manager who served on Vision 202 committees and has experience leading projects and overseeing budgets. Helderle is endorsed.
