It adds up: Kanupke enters DePaul hall

A teacher in the Prospect High School math department has added a special honor to her resume.

Karen Stewart Kanupke is now a member of the DePaul University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kanupke, who while a Hersey High student featured one the strongest arms of any shortstop to play softball in the Mid-Suburban League, was among DePaul's inductees for the class of 2017.

She was the shortstop for the Blue Demon's 2000 Women's College World Series softball team.

The hall of fame inductees were introduced at halftime at the Feb. 25 men's basketball game against Seton Hall at Allstate Arena. The induction ceremony took place later at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

The new hall of famers were also introduced at halftime of the women's basketball game against Georgetown at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Feb. 26.

Kanupke, a freshman starter in the spring of 1995, helped lead DePaul to its first appearance in the Women's College World Series as a senior in 2000.

She is fifth all-time in program history with 31 career home runs, second all-time in doubles with 62 and second all-time in RBI with 179.

"You remember your teammates and the bond you shared with them," Kanupke said in a story on the official website for DePaul athletics. "The core of myself, Yvette Healy and Nicole Terpstra Wondaal (softball teammates who were also inducted into the hall of fame with Kanupke) showed up together as freshmen and spent four years together. Some of my memories are of playing softball with them, but even more are from all the time we spent together in each other's company."

Kanukpe played shortstop all four years.

Because of her arm, she had a chance to throw out runner no matters where she fielded the ball.

Hersey fans will remember that as well when she starred as a Huskies all-area shortstop.

"We all picked DePaul because we liked Eug's (coach Eugene Lenti) coaching style and the school was close to home so my family could come watch me play," she said on the website story. "Our fathers - Yvette's, Nicole's and mine - were always watching us play together.

"Especially as a freshman, the juniors and seniors were a real asset. They showed us the goal of a college World Series, showed us how to work and how to be a student-athlete. When I became a senior, it was on us to show the freshmen how it is done.

"Every team needs contributions from all class levels and our World Series team was no different. We had a few freshmen who played big roles on our run."

Kanupke was the head softball coach at Prospect and also coached volleyball for about six years.

She scaled back when her daughters were born to provide more time for them. She now coaches their teams.

Baseball

Fontbonne University (St. Louis) junior first baseman Ryan Schocker (Schaumburg) went 3-for-6 with 3 doubles, 3 RBI and 3 runs to help the Griffins earn their first win of the season with a thrilling 13-12 win in 11 innings over Millikin University.

Overcoming a 7-run deficit, Fontbonne pushed across 2 runs in the bottom of the 11th, thanks in part to Schocker's sacrifice bunt which put runners in scoring position leading up to the game winning 2-run single.

Schocker has already driven in 6 runs, which are second best on the team. His .421 batting average leads the squad along with a .684 slugging percentage. He also has 3 doubles and a triple.
