One injured near Antioch when car hits tree

Lake County sheriff's police say they are continuing to investigate a traffic crash with injuries Friday morning that closed Route 45 between Route 173 and Edwards Road in an unincorporated area near Antioch.

Sgt. Chris Covelli of the Lake County sheriff's office said a vehicle was traveling south on Route 45 when it went off the road and rolled over about 10:20 a.m. Friday.

He said only one person was involved in the crash and that the vehicle hit a tree.

Sheriff's deputies arrived and located a 2010 Kia Forte with extensive damage. Preliminary investigation indicates the Kia was being driven south on Route 45 by a 58-year-old Wildwood man. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Witnesses report the driver of the Kia was attempting to pass other vehicles on the two-lane stretch of Route 45 when he lost control, authorities said. The driver was extricated and taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville via helicopter, with critical injuries, Covelli said.

As of Friday night, the driver remained hospitalized in critical condition at Condell, Covelli said.

Route 45 between Route 173 and Edwards Road was closed until to accommodate the traffic crash investigators Friday morning. By 2:30 p.m., traffic was cleared.
