District 212 honors seniors at Eagle Award ceremony

District 212 honored 22 students at the Inspirational Eagle Award Ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the East campus.

The event includes seniors from both campuses who have improved or maintained excellence in academics, attendance, behavior and citizenship. Parents, administrators, teachers and members of the Rotary Club of Chicago-O'Hare also were invited to attend.

Leyden faculty members were asked to nominate students who they considered deserving of the award. Based on the four-point criteria, the building principals, members of the Rotary Club and Frank Holthouse, Leyden's director of careers and community outreach, selected 22 students from a pool of 30 nominees as young people who embody the spirit of the Rotary organization. Award recipients received a certificate, trophy and $50 gift card.

The following students are this year's award winners: East Leyden: Anayeli Alatorre, Sintia Alatorre, Francis Bedolla, Jorge Gutierrez, Nada Marei, Hilda Mendoza, Mariana Mishchanchuk, Valentina Nacheva, Kermira Rockett, Georgia Thomas and Irma Tovar; West Leyden: Griselda Aburto, Oscar Albizures Rosales, Frida Banuelos, Ivette Diaz, Sara Erl, Yekseny Guerrero, Alexis Hurtado, Victor Jimenez, Melisa Medina, Ashley O'Donnell and Sunny Patel.

"Many of our students find themselves in situations where they have had to overcome adversity in order to reach their potential in school," Holthouse says. "This is the case with many of this year's recipients."

Parents, teachers, administrators and Rotary Club members were invited to attend the ceremony. Jason Markey, principal at East Leyden, and John Kearns, president of the Rotary Club of Chicago-O'Hare, addressed the students.
