Plans call for turning Indiana rail line into 9.2-mile trail

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Plans are in the works for a paved 9.2-mile pedestrian and bicycle trail connecting the Indiana cities of Noblesville and Fishers.

Officials announced Tuesday that the roughly $9.3 million Nickel Plate Trail project would be developed over the existing Nickel Plate Rail line.

The Indianapolis Star reports the move also signals the State Fair train, which was canceled last year amid needed track repairs, is likely done for good.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness says in a statement that the project is "another step in fulfilling our vision to create more opportunities for residents to really get out and experience our community." An aim is to bolster both cities' long-range trail plans.

The trail will be developed under a federal program as part of the National Trails System Act.
