Arlington Heights man admits trying to strangle pregnant wife

An Arlington Heights man pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempting to strangle his seven months pregnant wife last September.

In exchange for his guilty plea, Justin Gorre, 27, was sentenced to two years of probation, with the first year on intensive probation.

Cook County Judge Joel Greenblatt ordered Gorre to wear a GPS monitor for the first six months, submit to a mental health evaluation and participate in domestic violence counseling. The judge also imposed an order of protection preventing Gorre from contacting the victim through March 1, 2021.

Prosecutors say the couple were arguing over Justin Gorre's relationship with a co-worker when the argument grew violent. Gorre, who was on court supervision for battery at the time, placed a pillow over his wife's face, put a sock in her mouth and held a towel across her throat, impeding her breathing, said Assistant State's Attorney Kristin Piper.

Gorre hid the woman's cellphone, preventing her from calling police, Piper said. She escaped to a neighbor's apartment. Hearing the neighbor call police, Gorre jumped off the balcony and fled, Piper said.

Greenblatt warned Gorre to take his sentence seriously.

"If you're ever in my courtroom again facing a similar charge, or if you violate any single condition, I'm going to send you to the penitentiary," Greenblatt said.
