Triple the fun for Grayslake Central grad Brewster

Grayslake Central graduate Will Brewster pulled off a rare triple for his Davidson men's track and field team.

And it paid off hugely at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championships in Fairfax, Va.

Brewster began the meet by successfully defending his 2016 title in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.87.

The next morning he ran a 4:10.21 mile, placing second and breaking a Davidson College mile record in the process.

Brewster capped the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000 meters.

He scored 23 points and his overall performance earned him honors as track athlete of the meet.

Brewster has been an all-conference performer seven times in his two years at Davidson and has three conference titles.

He now turns his attention to his final outdoor season, with his sights on a return trip to the NCAA Championships, where he qualified last year in the 5,000.

Women's basketball

Wisconsin-Whitewater sophomore center Becky Deichl (Libertyville) earned one of the Warhawks' athlete of the week awards.

She averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor to help the No. 24 Warhawks to a 1-1 week. She registered career highs in points (17) and rebounds (10) for her first career double-double and shot 8-of-16 from the floor against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday at Kachel Gymansium. Deichl played a career-high 30 minutes and posted 8 points and 7 rebounds Saturday to help UW-Whitewater to a 57-37 triumph over UW-River Falls to maintain the team's hold on the No. 2 spot in the conference standings.

Women's volleyball

Grayslake Central senior Morgan Anderberg has made a verbal commitment to Augustana.

The 5-foot-7 Anderberg played libero, setter and outside hitter during her high school career. As a senior, she was a first-team All-Northern Lake County Conference and all-area selection who helped Grayslake Central to the NLCC co-championship.

A three-year starter, she led coach Jason Janczak's Rams with 162 kills this year and ranked second on the team in digs (334) and service aces (38).

She also competed in softball and is planning on a pre-nursing major at Augustana.

Men's lacrosse

In his first career start in goal, Augustana sophomore Jeremiah Heredia (Warren) recorded 16 saves in a 16-9 win over visiting Cornell in the Vikings' season opener. It equaled the eighth-highest single-game total in program history.

• North Central sophomore Tanner James (Warren) scored the first goal with 9:30 left in the first half of the Cardinals' 25-1 victory nonconference rival Concordia-Chicago.

The Cardinals' 25-point win put them just 4 points behind Illinois Wesleyan, the current College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin team record holder for most points in a single game.

Men's golf

Augustana senior Eric Swanson (Vernon Hills) shot 240 (74-88-78) at the Arizona Christian Spring Invitational in Phoenix.

The Vikings shot a combined score of 961 over the three rounds at the Moon Valley Country Club (par 72 and 7,180 yards) and placed 14th in the team standings. Host Arizona Christian won the team title with a score of 866 (287-293-286) over the two-day, three-round tournament.

Women's track and field

Augustana sophomore Laura McNair (Lake Zurich) was eighth in the 5,000 in 19:20.50 and junior teammate Emily Webster (Lakes) placed eighth in the weight toss with a throw of 45 feet, 8 inches at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.

The Vikings finished fifth in the team standings with 82.5 points.

• Illinois State senior Hayley Becker (Libertyville) took third place in high jump at the Missouri Valley Conference meet in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Men's track and field

Augustana junior Kevin Barbian (Libertyville) placed second in the shot with a toss of 49-11¾ at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's indoor track & field championships in Bloomington, Ill. He took fifth in the weight toss with a 50-6.

The Vikings placed second in the team standings.

Junior Evan Murphy (Buffalo Grove) took second with a mark of 44-11 in the triple jump.
