Daily Herald earns APSE Sunday Sports section honors

For the second consecutive year, the Daily Herald's Sunday Sports Section earned Top 10 honors in The Associated Press Sports Editors contest.

The Daily Herald was competing against newspapers with a circulation between 75,000 and 175,000 subscribers. Also earning Top 10 honors for work in 2016 in that division were The Buffalo News, The Charlotte Observer, The Indianapolis Star, The Oklahoman, Omaha World-Herald, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Salt Lake Tribune, San Antonio Express-News, The Seattle Times and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Chicago Tribune was among 13 media groups in various divisions that won "Grand Slam" honors in the contest. Along with the Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Washington Post, competing in the over-175,000 division, earned top 10 recognition for their daily, Sunday, special sections and website.

The Washington Post led all organizations with 16 total awards, followed by The New York Times with 15, and the Seattle Times with 11.

The News-Gazette in Champaign also earned Top 10 Daily Sports and Special Section honors among newspapers under 75,000, and the Peoria Journal Star received on honorable mention in Daily Sports. For newspapers under 30,000, the Northwest Herald earned Top 10 Daily and Special Section honors as well as Top 10 writing honors for Breaking News and Project Reporting.

In Top 10 writing awards, Paul Sullivan of the Tribune was honored for Project Reporting, Eric Van Dril of Pioneer for Features under 30,000, and Kirk Wessler of Peoria for columnists in the under 75,000 division.
