St. Edward celebrates 3rd-place finish

It may not have been the hardware the players had in mind when they set out for downstate Normal three days earlier, but the St. Edward High School girls basketball team and its supporters still had plenty to celebrate when they returned to their Elgin campus Sunday with a third-place trophy in tow.

After suffering a heartbreaking 3-point loss to Bloomington Central Catholic in Friday's 2A state semifinals, the Green Wave rallied on Saturday to beat Central Southeastern of Camp Point 47-42 in the third-place game.

The state trophy is St. Edward's fifth in girls basketball but first in more than 25 years. The school won the Class A championship in 1985, finished third in 1986, second in 1988 and fourth in 1991.

Team members, classmates, school officials, parents and fans celebrated the their success with a rally in the school gym.
