Hoopeston dealer gets life for cocaine and meth distribution

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A Hoopeston (HUHP-stun) man has been sentenced to life in federal prison for trafficking crystal meth and cocaine in Champaign.

Jose Jaime "J.J." Lopez has been in custody since his arrest in January 2016.

The U.S. attorney's office for the central district of Illinois announced the sentence Tuesday.

A federal jury found the 37-year-old Lopez guilty in November of distribution of cocaine and methamphetamine. He was also convicted of attempted possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver.

The government presented evidence at a three-day trial. It included that Lopez ordered delivery of ten ounces of crystal meth in October 2014. He made arrangements with a Mexican drug cartel member in Houston.

Federal agents and Champaign police seized 273 grams of nearly pure crystal meth in Rantoul on Oct. 3, 2014.
