Rossi, Voight best among Lake County bowlers

ROCKFORD - Warren's Kayla Rossi and Lakes' Emily Voight rolled to the best of their ability on Saturday and finished among the best bowlers at the IHSA state meet at Cherry Bowl.

Rossi, a senior, worked her way up to the 25th spot and finished in 29th place with 2,438 pins for 12 games over two days.

"I really can't be upset with my finish," Rossi said. "I picked myself out of a rut (from Friday). I was just out of my comfort zone. It wasn't the way I wanted to finish my high school career. It wasn't a successful experience but a learning experience."

Rossi had an impressive day, opening up with a 636 series (games of 202, 176 and 258). She then rolled a 640 in the afternoon with games of 232, 227 and 181.

Voight, the first Eagles' bowler to compete at state, set the table for the future. The sophomore made her way up to the 14th spot at one point and ended 31st.

"I started off the day really well," Voight said. "I wasn't sure what happened after that. The lanes broke down in the afternoon and I just had to trust the ball. It wasn't my best bowling and I didn't achieve my goal. But I'm still pretty happy for the weekend. I know I have a couple of years left to come back."

Voight opened with a 659 series (games of 246, 237 and 180). She then threw a 534 series over the last three games for a total of 2,411.

Lake Zurich's Amanda Tarlos finished in 45th place (2,315). She also had a good morning with a 653 series and a high game of 237. Warren's Victoria Dizon finished in 58th place (2,242).

Machesney Park Harlem won the state championship with 12,310 pins, 38 ahead of runner-up Lockport (12,272). Waubonsie Valley (11, 619) placed third.

Buffalo Grove's Jessica Soskich was the tournament champion for the second straight year (2,669).
