Man still hospitalized after I-55 crash

One person critically injured in a chain-reaction crash Friday on Interstate 55 near Plainfield remained hospitalized Saturday, state police said.

Traffic was backed up on I-55 because of an earlier crash north of Route 30 Friday afternoon, state police Trooper Daniel Kenshol said.

The driver of a semitrailer truck failed to slow down and struck the rear of another vehicle, causing a second, chain-reaction crash, Kenshol said. A total of eight vehicles, including the truck, were involved.

One of the drivers, a man, was flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in critical condition, Kenshol said.

Seven other people were taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet.

The semitrailer truck driver, who also was taken to Presence, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and following too closely, Kenshol said. His name and age were not immediately known.
