See 'Singin' in the Rain' on the big screen

At 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, Gorton Community Center will feature a screening of "Singin' in the Rain" in the center's John & Nancy Hughes Theater as part of the Film Series at Gorton. Tickets are $5.

"Singin' in the Rain" is one of the greatest and most successful musicals ever filmed, filled with memorable songs, lavish routines and Gene Kelly's song-and-dance number performed in the rain.

The musical is set during the advent of "talkies." Don Lockwood has risen to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era paired with the beautiful and jealous Lina Lamont.

When Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden, Lamont has her fired. But with the introduction of talking pictures, Lockwood finds his career in jeopardy after audiences laugh when they hear Lamont's shrill voice for the first time, until the studio decides to use Selden to dub her voice. The film is rated "G."

On the heels of the passing of star Debbie Reynolds, who played Kathy Selden, and with "La La Land" receiving 14 Oscar nominations and bringing new interest in musicals, it's a great opportunity to see "Singin' in the Rain" on the big screen.

Tickets are available in advance at www.gortoncenter.org/programs/all/singing. Patrons are encouraged to purchase prior to the day of show to ensure a seat. This event is one night only.

"We are actively working to bring you current, time loved films to the John & Nancy Hughes Theater," Gorton Film Director Jamie Hall said.

The Gorton Community Center is at 400 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest.
