Chicago police officer fired for off-duty shooting in 2011

CHICAGO (AP) - A veteran Chicago police officer has been fired for shooting 16 times at the wrong car during a 2011 incident.

The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/2lRDE7t) the Chicago Police Board voted unanimously Thursday to dismiss Officer Francisco Perez, who was off duty at the time of the shooting.

Chairman Lori Lightfoot says the Chicago Police Board found Perez at fault for not identifying the appropriate target and not taking "reasonable precautions" before firing his gun at the wrong car. The driver of the car that Perez fired at was wounded.

Perez's lawyer, Daniel Herbert, described the officer as a hero and dismissed the allegations against him as preposterous.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a report on Chicago police that, among other things, faulted officers for resorting to force too often and criticized officer training as inadequate.
