St. Emily students donate cans of soup for pantries

Between Jan. 18 and Feb. 1, St. Emily School students were asked to bring in canned soup to donate to the Mount Prospect and Des Plaines food pantries. The homeroom collecting the most soup would win lunch with St. Emily's pastor and principal.

The students turned this outreach project into a prosperous "Souper Bowl" competition. Two rooms collected more than 800 cans each, and the Pre-K 3 through grade 8 total cans of donated soup rose to 4,872.

"The students brought in five times the amount of cans we expected," said Erin Folino, faculty coordinator of the event. "Their spirit was great for this project. What really brought the point across, though, was when they, too, had to have just soup for lunch.

"Through this, students could relate to what having only soup and no snacks all day feels like - a feeling similar to how those with little food feel everyday, all day; hunger."

The winning room, Stacey Ankony's second-grade class, donated 888 cans of soup. The second highest room was Sandra Brogmus' fifth-grade class, with 862. Third place went to Jackie Ewig's first-grade class, with 480 cans donated.

The souper bowl was part of St. Emily School's celebration of Catholic Schools Week.
