Carmel, Conant and Lake Park earn at-large state berths

This year, instead of eight teams competing in the girls gymnastics state finals, there will be nine.

In addition to sectional champions Prairie Ridge, DeKalb, Glenbrook South and Lincoln-Way East, there will be five at-large team qualifiers to next weekend's festivities to be hosted by Palatine.

That's because Lake Park and Conant - who competed in different sectional meets - tied for the fourth-best at-large qualifying score. The IHSA's girls gymnastics rules specify that teams which tie for that position both advance to state.

Conant finished second in Tuesday's Fremd sectional, while Lake Park was third on Wednesday at Glenbard North. Both scored 144.1.

The other at-large qualifiers are Glenbard West (145.725), New Trier (145.275) and Carmel Catholic (144.8). Each of those teams were sectional runners-up.

Lincoln-Way East won the final sectional, hosted by Oswego on Thursday, with a score of 144.075. Downers Grove South was second at 140.2.
