One injured in Aurora apartment fire sparked by candle

A candle that fell onto a mattress triggered an apartment fire Monday morning in Aurora, authorities said.

The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. in one of the first-floor apartments of a four-story, 30-unit apartment building on the 400 block of North Lake Street, according to an Aurora Fire Department news release.

Upon arrival, firefighters came upon smoke on the first floor. They extinguished the fire within five minutes and contained damage to the mattress and contents of the bedroom, authorities said.

The resident was burned when she tried to extinguish the fire on her own. She was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

Fire department officials deemed the apartment habitable, though it had minor smoke damages and a broken window - a total loss value of $500.
