Illinois ranks third in LEED building projects

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois continues to lead the nation in environmentally sustainable building by making strides in sustainable design and construction.

The 2016 national rankings released Wednesday by the U.S. Green Building Council list the state in third place. This makes it one of just two states to remain in the top ten since the rankings began seven years ago.

Illinois Department of Commerce Director Sean McCarthy credited the state's long history of architectural innovation for attracting green builders. He also commended those builders for making Illinois a better place to live, work and invest.

One-hundred-and-fifty LEED-certified projects took place here over the past year. The council projects that LEED construction will account for a total of 413,000 Illinois jobs along with $36 billion in revenue from 2015 through 2018.
