Wheaton North can't contain WW South
The lead started at 6 points. Timeout.
Then it grew to 9 points. Timeout.
Soon it ballooned to 16. Timeout.
Nothing - not even the nervous energy of the cross-town rivalry - slowed Wheaton Warrenville South's boys basketball team on Tuesday.
Breaking out to a 12-0 lead and never looking back, the Tigers rolled to a 50-30 DuPage Valley Conference victory over visiting Wheaton North to sweep the two-game regular-season series.
Drew and Jake Healy sparked the avalanche of points, combining for 6 of the Tigers' nine 3-pointers in the first half. Even with leading scorer Dillon Durrett on the bench for most of the half with two fouls, WW South (20-1, 9-0) didn't blink.
"We were feeling it," said Drew Healy, who led the balanced Tigers with 14 points. "We shot pretty well and rebounded pretty well and played defense pretty well. It was a good night for us."
WW South couldn't have opened the second half of the DVC schedule any better while knocking the Falcons (14-5, 6-3) another game back in the standings. The Tigers were strong on both ends but especially on defense as they held Wheaton North without a second-quarter field goal.
The Tigers held their biggest lead of 47-19 early in the fourth quarter before the benches for both sides took over.
"It was sort of the perfect storm of them playing very well and us playing about as bad as you can," said Falcons coach Dave Brackmann. "You're going to have losses. Unfortunately that was about as bad as it gets, but it counts as one loss. We have to figure out a way to be much better the next time we come out."
Jake Healy finished with 9 points along with Chase Stebbins, who added a pair of WW South's 11 3-pointers. Rowan McGowen and Matt Brcka each scored 5 points to lead the Falcons, who struggled just to get shots in the first half as the margin grew.
"On offense you don't know what you're going to get, but hopefully we know what we're going to get defensively," said Tigers coach Mike Healy, whose team won for the seventh straight time. "I thought we played really well defensively. We shot it well and we defended pretty well."
