Bears make 3 assistant coach hires official

The Chicago Bears announced Thursday the addition of three assistant coaches: Jeremiah Washburn (offensive line), Curtis Modkins (running backs) and Roy Anderson (assistant defensive backs).

Washburn replaces Dave Magazu, Modkins takes over for Stan Drayton and Anderson succeeds Sam Garnes.

Drayton left the Bears to become the associate head coach, running backs coach and run game coordinator for the Texas Longhorns. Garnes and Magazu, both of whom previously coached under Bars head coach John Fox with the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos, were fired.

Outside linebackers coach Clint Hurtt's contract was not renewed.

Washburn has spent 15 years in the NFL as a coach and scout. Last season he was the Miami Dolphins' assistant offensive line coach under head coach Adam Gase, who was the Bears' offensive coordinator in 2015.

In the seven years prior to that, Washburn was with the Detroit Lions, four years as an offensive assistant (2009-12) and three as the offensive line coach (2013-15).

Modkins, who has been an NFL assistant for the previous nine years, was the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator last season. Before that he was the Detroit Lions' running backs coach/run game coordinator for three years (2013-15). He was also the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator and running backs coach for three years (2010-12).

Anderson has eight years of NFL coaching experience. Last season he was the San Francisco 49ers' assistant defensive backs coach. Before that he coached the secondary for four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (2012-15).
