Yorkville handles Kaneland again

If there's any good news about Kaneland's 67-49 loss to Yorkville Tuesday night, it's that the Foxes are now off the Knights' schedule.

Kaneland (16-4, 6-3 in the Northern Illinois Big XII) is rolling along this year with just 4 losses, but half of them are to Yorkville (18-1, 9-0).

And both defeats have been by 18 points. Despite a good start Tuesday and a new defense, Kaneland wasn't able to come any closer to staying with a Foxes team that has now won 15 straight since its only loss of the year to Trinity.

"They are really good," Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. "We contained them early a little bit but they adjusted. I thought some of their role players really stepped up and hit some shots tonight."

Jenni Weber's jumper gave the Knights a 4-2 lead, and moments later she drained a 3 and another jumper to make it 11-6.

Yorkville started slow against Kaneland's unique defense before a 12-2 run in the second quarter put the Foxes up 29-21 at halftime.

"We were kind of like a triange-and-one," Colombe said. "We wanted to keep our center in the lane with (Katie) Nolan and kind of match up the other four and take away (Lauren) Daffenberg. They are a good team, they do it to a lot of people."

Yorkville outscored Kaneland 8-2 early in the third quarter and led by double digits the rest of the night. Weber finished with 16 points, Grace Ringel added 9 points and 3 blocked shots, and Jamie Martens had 8 assists.

Daffenberg paced the Foxes with 14, and Nolan's 12 points included her 1,000th career point.

"I think we got more comfortable with what they were doing on defense," Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said. "I think it took us awhile to adjust to that. Kaneland came out all guns a blazing and we knew they would. Defensively we got some steals and breakaways and easier buckets."
