Police: Hammond man lost balance, hit by vehicle and killed

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - Police in Hammond say they believe a local man who was struck by a vehicle and killed this week fell onto the road after losing his balance.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times (http://bit.ly/2iUA3Ae ) reports that Hammond Police Lieutenant Patrick Vicari says an investigation revealed that 56-year-old Marvin Keith Thomas had been released from an area hospital not long before he was killed Wednesday night. Vicari says investigators think that Thomas had a medical incident while walking along Columbia Avenue and fell into the outer lane of the road.

He says one driver swerved to avoid hitting Thomas but while that driver was calling 911, a second vehicle was unable to avoid Thomas and hit him. Vicari says no charges will be filed against the driver.
